Welcome to Bright Line Leadership

Welcome to Bright Line LeadershipWelcome to Bright Line LeadershipWelcome to Bright Line Leadership

Building powerful, productive teams. Maximizing personal growth, success, and influence.

The Bright Line Philosophy

The “Bright Line” philosophy is rooted in servant leadership and revolves around three critical principles:

  1. No one gets to define themselves as a leader. We can aspire to practice leadership, but only those who are looking to us can bestow that title (or not) based on how successful we are in our practice. The moment you believe you’ve arrived as a leader is the moment you’re on a slippery slope toward failing in that practice. The price of the desire to lead is constant vigilance.
  2. What leadership looks like may not be up to the leader. There isn’t just one form of leadership or a “right” way to practice it. The successful practice of leadership means you are willing and able to meet the needs of the team and circumstances regardless of if it’s what you want, what you like, or what you are comfortable with.
  3. Leadership defies definition because it is something that is felt. We may not always be entirely conscious of the presence of leadership, but we are always acutely aware of when we are experiencing an absence of leadership. Everyone can relate to that teacher, coach, principal, conductor, supervisor, pastor, instructor, etc. who we expected to lead us but didn’t live up to those expectations. Leadership has a bright line threshold that we viscerally feel.

Bright Line leaders ensure their team is effective, engaged, agile, resilient, and thriving.

  • Effective—How well do the team members leverage their strengths and navigate their areas of challenge? Can they work together synergistically?
  • Engaged—Is the team on board with the mission and aligned on values?  Are they giving their best effort?
  • Agile—Is the team flexible enough to meet challenges outside of their initial expertise? How do they respond to changing circumstances?
  • Resilient—How does the team respond when pushed outside of their comfort zone? How does the team cope in the face of adversity?
  • Thriving—Can the team be effective, engaged, agile, and resilient but maintain their wellbeing?

Effectively practicing leadership means exceeding that bright line threshold even when we’re standing on shifting sands of circumstance in unfamiliar, uncomfortable territory.

I chose Andrew intentionally because of his impressive knowledge of Emotional Intelligence, as well as his incredible ability to teach and train leaders using practicality, honesty, and real-life examples. He is willing to be vulnerable to help others learn and has impressive educational credentials, as well as the "real life" experience of being a high-level leader in a large organization. This mix of education and experience make him an excellent coach, mentor, and trainer for any of your leadership needs.

I have been fortunate enough to have Andy as a facilitator for two separate group sessions on emotional intelligence. One full day in person, and another virtual half-day session. On both occasions, Andy very capably connected with the audience and clearly conveyed the key principles of emotional intelligence, while also fostering introspection and connection within the group. He gave us clear examples of real situations, and allowed us to better understand our own strengths and areas for development by telling our own stories. I never felt I was being "sold to," and heard similar feedback from my colleagues - Andy is authentic and cares about helping others to grow into their best selves.

After being introduced to the Hogan Assessment, I connected with Andy to understand myself as a leader and how I am perceived as a leader. Andy is adept and thorough in his ability to guide me through the nuances of how this assessment could help me be a more effective leader. He was intentional about reminding me that there is nothing wrong with who I am as a leader and there are also areas where I can help others to respond to me better by understanding my "why" and how I might be perceived if I do not explain my "why." Thank you, Andy, for all your guidance and wisdom.
